A lot of things have changed in the world of comics since the Global COVID-19 pandemic shut down several industries, including the comics industry back in late March, but many things are still largely the same. Effective this Wednesday (May 20th) new comics will be on sale from Diamond Comics Distribution, although there will be drastically reduced output as all publishers ramp back up.
In-Store dates have changed drastically, and we’re still trying to catch up with everything, but basically everything is pushed back about 6-8 weeks right now. We’ll know more as Diamond and the publishers update us on new dates.
DC Comics is still with our primary distributor – Diamond, but they’re also using two other distributors, Luna Distribution and USC distribution. Some DC comics were distributed over the last few weeks via these alternate distributors, but the comics are also being distributed by Diamond, and will arrive over the next two weeks.
We have chosen to stick with our current distribution partner, for both simplicity (one set of boxes to deal with weekly), and also cost (a single freight charge rather than multiple).
DC has also announced that they will allow Tuesday on-sale dates, however, since all other publishers are still Wednesday on-sale, we will stick with what we’ve always done. Tuesdays new comics are pulled, Wednesdays we do billing (weekly, bi-weekly and monthly).
Marvel has cancelled several series, changing them to digital only.
Ant-Man, Avengers of the Wasteland, Ghost Spider, Ravencroft, Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Black Cat Strikes, Hawkeye Freefall, Star, and 2020 Ironhart are all going Digital only.
DC Comics will be releasing Supergirl #41, and #42 only via digital, and The Terrifics final three issues #28, #29, and #30 will be released only via digital.
Some publishers have left Diamond, these include Alterna and Scout comics. For now there are no Canadian distribution plans for either of these publishers, so we are playing a bit of a “wait and see” game with them.
